Diabetes

Diabetes

What is Diabetes?

Diabetes mellitus is a disease caused by the body's inability to use the hormone insulin which produced in the pancreas to control the blood sugar.

History of diabetes:

The symptoms of diabetes were identified 3,500 years ago in Egypt and were also known in ancient India, China, Japan, and Rome. An English epidemiologist was the first modern physician to discover that the urine of diabetics tastes sweet.

What is Insulin?

Insulin is a hormone that produced in the pancreas. It’s function is to convert carbohydrates into glucose. Glucose is used by cells to obtain the energy they need to survive, reproduce, and carry out all normal functions.

What are the types of Diabetes

There are two main types of diabetes mellitus are known. Type I diabetes is also called insulin-dependent diabetes which occurs when the pancreas fails to produce enough insulin and it can be controlled by doses of insulin and a strict diet. Type II diabetes results when the pancreas does produce insulin but, for some reason, the body is unable to use the insulin normally. It is often caused by obesity and is usually controlled by diet alone.

Another Type:

Gestational diabetes occurs during pregnancy. Like other types of diabetes, it involves a defect in the way the body processes and uses dietary sugars. Few pregnant women develop gestational diabetes.

How to control Diabetes

To control diabetes you should control your blood sugar level by eating right, exercising and by taking your insulin or medicine the right way depends on the type of diabetes you have. Checking your blood sugar is necessary to control your blood sugar. Monitoring blood sugar regularly can help to show how eating increases your blood sugar level, how exercising can help lower your level and how your insulin or medicine affects that level and it also helps your doctor to change your treatment plan if needed.

Diabetes in the UAE:

UAE has the second highest prevalence of diabetes worldwide. 1 of every 5 people has diabetes and about 20% of the adult population are diabetics.

Actions against diabetes:

A walkathon called “Walk UAE 2007” was held on November 23 on the corniche of the capital Abu Dhabi to fight diabetes and 10,000 people were expected to participate in the event

Conflict Diamonds

Conflict Diamond

Deep in Africa, one of the biggest industries of diamonds came a story of tragedy and suffering made by bunch forces and lived it a group of innocents.

What are the “conflict diamonds” or “blood diamonds”? Diamonds that are trade out of Africa during the civil war and their funds were used by the rebels to buy more weapons. These diamonds are considered illegal.

In 1990, Angola and Sierra Leone were a spots for the civil war which the Liberian president Charles G. Taylor was directly involved in by supporting the rebels with weapons and training to get diamonds in return.

In 2003 move adapted by the UN called “Kimberley Process” was organized to assure that non of the conflict diamonds will inter the diamonds market

It’s every body’s responsibility to make sure where he buys diamonds and think about millions of innocents who have died in the civil war.“ Blood Diamonds” are still finding their way to the market so be careful.

Diamonds Trade

Diamonds are probably the most invaluable and hardest stones in the whole world. Because of their value diamonds are usually sold in markets as jewels and used in some factories to cut hard stuffs due to their hardness. About 50% of the world’s diamonds are found in Africa which also the centre of a very huge trading industry controlled by a huge company called “Dee Beers” located in South Africa and England. 90% of diamonds are cut in India in addition of Antwerp, New York, Tel Aviv and London as other cutting and trading industries. Among all those diamonds sold daily there are what called “Conflict Diamonds” also known as “Blood Diamonds”. These diamonds are sold by groups of rebels who control the diamond mines in some African countries to help their operations which involve the killing of many innocent people. Even though “Conflict Diamonds” are considered illegal, they still find their way to the markets mixed up with the other diamonds. That’s why the “Kimberley Process” was made to insure that the diamonds market is free of the “Conflict Diamonds”.

My Life as Child

I was born in 1982 to a small family, my father died 16 years back when I was eight so I don’t remember much about him except that he was very strict about my studies and he was a loving father. My mother has taken care of me since my father died and I really love her so much. I have four sisters but no brothers. In fact I’m the only male at home. My childhood was normal like any other kids full of fun and irresponsible actions. My first day at school was miserable, I remember when my father took me there and left me I started crying and went back home. After that I got used to it. I seven years old at that time and I was one of the best students at school.

My Teenage Life

When I was a teenager I spent most of my time at home because my mother didn’t want me to involve in any troubles outside, only going to school then coming back home so there is nothing interesting about it.

Right Now

I’ve got married a year and a half ago to my cousin and five months ago we had our little girl “Barakah” who I named after my grandmother. On the first of July last year I got type one diabetes and spent a whole week in the hospital to control my blood sugar which was 373 then I left the hospital with bottles of insulin and a glucometer. Now I’m taking two doses of insulin daily and following a strict diet and I lost many pounds. Many people think that it’s a terrible thing to have diabetes and so I do, but I’ve never been so concern about my health as now, as the matter effect diabetes made me healthier than ever.

My Trip Abroad

I went with my family to Yemen when I was eight, and that is my only trip aboard. On my first day there I become sick because of the different weather. We stayed there for two months then came back to UAE but without my father because he lost his passport there so he couldn’t come back and stayed there for another two month and died of brain’s malaria, so you can see that this was a very bad trip and I’ll never go there again.

My Interests

When ever I have a free time I spend it either watching movies and animations or playing video games. I like martial arts, adventure, horror and comedy in movies and video games. Before getting married I used to practice karate and kickboxing and I was moving from dojo to another but couldn’t spend more than a month in a dojo because of some transportation problems but I still know how to fight.

“Ahmed Deedat” is a well known Muslim scholar and an expert in comparative religions. He died in 2005. This guy has a great influence on me. I started watching many videos on his debates with Christian priests and missionaries. He traveled around the world giving lectures and debating In fact he was able to explain many things logically more than any others. I’ve learned many things about religions and started thinking seriously about becoming a scholar too.

I have many plans for the future like becoming a movie director and producer and video games creator and a martial arts master and a scholar but sadly I won’t be able to all of them at once so I think that my last decision is to become scholar and help people to find the right way.
